[edit] Save Our Toilets Rally: Jan 1st 2009
All of the public toilets on Alston Moor (Nenthead, Alston, Garrigill) are scheduled to be closed by Eden District council. This leaves a huge area of the Pennines, popular with walkers and cyclists, in which there will be no public conveniences. Nenthead and Garrigill are on the Coast to Coast cycle route and much local business is generated by cyclists and walkers who stop to use the amenities.
Last year the people of Nenthead were successful in saving the Post Office, reopening and running it as a successful community run shop. In a time when Post Offices are being closed we fought to keep ours and won.
The Eden District councillors who represent Alston Moor voted in favour of the toilet closures - contrary to the interests of their constituents. As a result there is a swell of public feeling pushing for their removal.
The public toilets in Nenthead are due to be closed on 31st December 2008 - it is too late now to prevent them being locked. A campaign to save the toilets has been started.
A rally will be held on New Years day to express the strength of public opinion and force the council to consider alternative plans for the maintenance of the toilets. At 14:00 on January 1st 2009 local people will convene at the conveniences and march to save our loos.
We're hoping for as much media coverage as possible. Alston Moor is a poor area largely dependent on tourism for its survival. Elsewhere the closure of toilets would have a relatively small impact on the local economy but for us it could be devastating.
[edit] Nenthead Ward meeting: 30th July 2007
A great meeting. Well attended with lots of lively debate and several tins of biscuits devoured. The minutes can be accessed here however we thought it would be good to have a 'breaking news' area so all you Nenthead fans can catch up quickly with what we’re up to.
[edit] Latest Developments
The Committee working to establish the Village Community Shop is making excellent progress. It looks like the Over 60s building will become the home of our shop and could be with us by Autumn 2007. This is a great development and the new space will offer all sorts of possibilities – there’s talk of a shop meeting space for residents to come together to enjoy a cup of tea and the latest gossip as well as the Post Office & shopping facilities.
But what about the Over 60s club and others that use that space? Well the next exciting development is that these groups will move to using the Village Hall. This will put the Village Hall right back where it belongs at the centre of community activities in the heart of our village. It is a lovely building with lots of possibilities but funding is needed to refurbish and develop the building to ensure that all can comfortably access and use. Needless to say another committee, the Village Hall Committee, is on the case – watch this space. And as we need to be pro-active in raising funding year on year to supplement the Village Hall income a proposal was made to resurrect the famous some would say infamous Nenthead Rose Queen Festival – an open meeting will be held 24th September 2007 at 6.30pm in the Over 60s if you’re interested in helping/advising/contributing it would be great to see you there.
Looks like the Play Committee have secured the Wall Ball facility for the play area – fingers crossed.
Now we just need to think where we can get money to buy the Monkey Bars…
Paul Mercer of the North Pennine Heritage Trust is currently putting together a three year development project for Nenthead and Overwater that will create a historical archive of village and mine life composed of old photographs, documents, parish and church records and oral recordings. The project will not just be about the community but will also involve the community and Paul is keen that the community actively contribute to the development of the archive. The Trust will provide office space and support to enable interested people to contribute – Paul will keep us informed of developments.
If you’ve got this far it won’t have escaped your notice that a lot is happening in our community and you will also have noticed that it’s the people in the community making it happen – behind the word ‘Committee’ is a whole lot of people working very hard on the behalf of our community – and a big thanks to all of them.
As I said at the beginning check the minutes for detail of any of the above – and you’re welcome to join us at our next meeting: 24th September 2007 at 7.30pm in the Over 60s.
