Minutes from Last Meeting

July 31st. No notes had been taken at the last meeting as only 3 people attended.

Nenthead Post Office update from Sally

The Steering Group of 6 people has met 3 times since the public meeting in August. They are working with secod, an organisation that specialises in setting up community businesses. The next tasks are to prepare a business plan and feasibility study, to decide on a management model, legal structure and apply for funding. The deadline for finishing is December and the group is hopeful that this will be achieved. Several study trips to other community shops are being arranged and residents are welcome to come. A leaflet will be delivered to residents next week to let them know progress.

‘Nenthead Triangle’ update from Richard Turner

Richard explained that Suzanne Kidger was the EDC officer responsible for work on the ‘Triangle’, but she had been unable to come tonight. Brain showed copies of the plans which are now waiting for planning permission. They will be considered by the Parish Council next week and hopefully passed by EDC later in the month. The plans are available in Alston Town Hall. Comments from residents can still be considered. Work will then be contracted out and will start as soon as possible. Planting will take place in the spring. EDC will be responsible for future maintenance, guided by local residents.

It was agreed that a ‘dog mess bin’ would not be appropriate as the site is too small for dog walking. Richard offered to give this message to Suzanne.

A question was asked about the future of the bus shelter which is waiting for a home. At present it is stored in Wright’s garage and customers waiting for Stagecoach buses wait outside the post office. It had been hoped that the new development would incorporate the shelter and a bus turning circle but this had not been possible. Richard explained that the development at Wrights was still under discussion.

Dog fouling on Nenthead School/Community Field

Nenthead school children have run an awareness project to discourage dog owners from letting their dogs foul on the field. They have also written to the Parish council and the EDC dog warden asking for a ‘dog mess bin’. Brian had a letter sent to the parish council from the EDC Environmental Health Officer explaining that a bin can only be provided if there is sufficient demand from the community. Everyone agreed that dog fouling is a problem on the field where children play and residents are encouraged to write to Sarah Davidson, Environmental Health Officer at Mansion House, Penrith to request a bin, or email sarah.davidson@eden.gov.uk.

Any Other Business

Notes from Ward meetings are available from the Post Office or Alston Town Hall. Andy Armstrong also offered to compile an email distribution list and send out notes and agendas if people give him their email address.

The next meeting of Nenthead Ward meeting will be held on Monday November 27th at 7.30pm at the Oversixties Room.
